Terry Singleton, Health and Safety Co-ordinator, and his wife Linda received the award on behalf of the Company. It is the 26th year in succession that the company has received this prestigious award from the British Safety Council. This outstanding record reflects the importance that the company places on safe working practices. Terry was appointed as H & S Co-ordinator in February of this year to ensure safe working practices are understood and accepted throughout the company and to help maintain and improve the Company's excellent record of safety. Up to 1,000 award winners from UK public and private sector organisations faced a gruelling test to satisfy the Awards Panel. Winners must have lower than average accident rates, sound safety policies and plans and a board level commitment to health and safety. They must detail their health and safety officers' qualifications and provide details of significant health and safety advances for the year. They must also provide notification of any impending health and safety legal action. David Ballard, Director General of the British Safety Council, says: "The National Safety Awards highlight organisations that reach the top levels of health and safety. They are a mark of a proven and significant achievement in safety standards." Prime Minister Tony Blair sent a message to winners via his office: "The Prime Minister was pleased to see that so far 25 traditional industry sectors have now set challenging health and safety targets in line with the national Revitalising Health and Safety ones. Mr. Blair feels that the efforts and commitment of the British Safety Council are making a real contribution to the Revitalising Health and Safety initiative and sends his very best to all award winners." Guests at the banquet, the biggest event in the safety calendar, listened to a keynote speech by George Brumwell, General Secretary of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians, and enjoyed a range of entertainment. |
